Camp 2017

It was a chilly few days at camp, but the fun activities warmed everyone right up!  AP students were treated to science, Michigan history, archery, and learned many things about various animals and reptiles, and made many new friends throughout their three day experience at camp.  AP students were also a shining example of always being on their best behavior that put a smile on all the all that attended.  Please enjoy some photos of their time

NEW PARTNERSHIP CREATED

THANK YOU – FLOWERS ON THE AVENUE!!

Address: 6834 Park Ave, Allen Park, MI 48101

Allen Park Public Schools would like to say THANK YOU to FLOWERS On The Avenue!  Our elementary art teachers have partnered up with Flowers on the Avenue to help our kindergarten students learn about Impressionist Art.  The kindergarten students in all three elementary schools are studying Art History with a focus Claude Monet and his famous waterlilies paintings!

Flowers On The Avenue has been donating flowers to our art program that will be used in this project!

How do we know when we are a Top 10 education state? Listen in, as Chief Deputy Superintendent Sheila Alles describes the metrics that are being used to measure our progress and help us determine what “Top 10” means.

In the Spotlight

Spark is Adobe’s solution to creating simple web graphics… and then some.   It’s incredible for creating quotes and graphics to be used for social media and on web pages.   With very little effort, you can create something that looks professionally created and is highly shareable.   They keep improving it, adding the ability to create simple web pages, and now animated videos too.   If you’ve ever seen the recipe videos that have taken Facebook by storm, then you know the type of videos we’re talking about.  Line up a series of clips, throw in some simple animations and a common theme, and you’ve got yourself a video!   It’s not a powerful editor, it’s not going to replace iMovie or anything.   But at the same time, it’s one of those sites that you really don’t need much technical know-how to get some impressive results.

A great explainer video can have a huge impact. It allows you to reach your audience and get your message across in a simple and engaging way. It doesn’t matter if you need to communicate in a professional environment, teach your students, or promote important issues that you feel very strongly about. With the power of simplicity, storytelling, and images that stay in mind, your message will get heard!

There are quite a few ways to create animated videos.   However, My Simpleshow is 100% unique in the genre.   You create a storyboard through text, and then it attempts to find clipart that is aligned with your words.   Don’t like an image?   Change it!  The drawings enter and exit through a variety of animations that will look familiar if you seen any RSA Animate or CommonCraft videos.   The net result is a very sophisticated looking video through a simple, easy to navigate interface.

Congrats Mrs. Solak for helping make Arno Green!

Dear Mrs. Solak,

I received and reviewed your Michigan Green School activity verification.  Congratulations! Because of the hard work from the teachers, students and parents, Arno Elementary School has received the 2017 Michigan Evergreen School designation, by completing at least 20 energy saving and environmental tasks.  The efforts you made to complete the tasks are very impressive.  I especially enjoyed learning about your composting project, rain barrels and the GLEP field trip.  I urge Arno Elementary School to continue with the energy saving and environmental tasks and hope you encourage others to follow.

Thank you for the well written and organized documentation, I very much appreciate it.

I will stay in contact with you regarding your certificate, banner, and the 10 year anniversary recognition ceremony, which has been scheduled for May 16, 2017.   Please note that if you already received a banner you will be receiving an annual decal to place on your banner.

NWEA Student Profile Report

Please review the summary below and click the link to watch the 7 minute video

Summary

The Student Profile report makes it easier for you to set recordable and trackable growth goals using your Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®) data. It also enables you to pinpoint student achievement in relation to state standards; this feature makes it simpler for you to differentiate instruction and give students the support they need to achieve their goals.

Learn how teachers use the new Student Profile report in this 10-minute on-demand webinar with Crystal Telep, an intervention specialist from Ridgeline Academy in Arizona. She will share what she gets out of the report and how it makes her job easier, as well as how to:

  • use linking studies to help students set attainable goals

  • identify students at risk of falling behind

  • improve instruction and help students reach goals

  • monitor progress over time

Key websites – In this All Things PLC page, Sarah Schuhl recommends the following websites that support effective teamwork and instruction:

  • EDSITEment – www.edsitement.neh.gov has standards-aligned lesson plans, student resources, and close readings in ELA, foreign languages, art and culture, history and social studies.

  • Classkick – https://www.classkick.com is a free formative feedback tool to use with high-level student tasks. The teacher uploads the tasks, has students complete them on a device, and can then view each student’s work and provide feedback.

  • Newsela – www.newsela.com provides topical informational texts at different Lexile levels, some with quizzes and some in Spanish.

  • ReadWorks – www.readworks.org provides informational and literary texts at varying reading levels with question sets, as well as elementary lessons and units on reading comprehension.

  • Literacy Design Collaborative – www.ldc.org has teacher-created lessons and modules geared to college and career readiness in ELA, social studies, science, and math, including task templates, rubrics, and student anchor papers.

  • Illustrative Mathematics – www.illustrativemathematics.org has math tasks geared to Common Core standards.

Four Fundamental Questions for Teacher Teams

In this article in All Things PLC, Robert Eaker (Middle Tennessee State University) and Heather Friziellie (Kildeer Countryside School District, IL) reprise the questions they believe every professional learning community should be asking:

–   What is essential for all students to learn in our subject, grade, or course?

–   How will we monitor the learning of each student – by name – on a frequent and timely basis?

–   How will we respond when students experience difficulty with their learning?

–   How will we extend the learning of students who demonstrate proficiency?
